Hydrogen technology

Green hydrogen technology plays a key role in the future global energy system and is of paramount importance in meeting climate targets. This raises a wide range of questions that require interdisciplinary cooperation to ensure optimized and economical use.
Current research activities at the CAE range from the production of the energy carrier to its transport and storage to its use in the electricity, transportation, and industrial processes sectors. The hydrogen laboratory, which supports start-ups, SMEs, and large companies with such issues, offers comprehensive metrology of material properties in contact with hydrogen.

Hydrogen technologies – application-oriented research from materials and components to use in energy systems.

Green hydrogen will play a key role in the world's future energy system. This valuable and versatile energy source offers a wide range of applications in a variety of sectors.
The challenges associated with each application of this energy source are as diverse as the applications themselves. Hydrogen production using a wide variety of methods, transport and storage as a cryogenic liquid or highly compressed gas, modification (e.g., in synfuels), and final use (e.g., fuel cells) raise a large number of research questions in a wide range of disciplines.
The Hydrogen Technology Innovation Hub and the Hydrogen Laboratory at the CAE are the central point of contact for industry, research partners, and the public on this topic. It links the disciplines of the individual research groups at the CAE and, with its interdisciplinary approach, addresses numerous issues ranging from materials research in the nanometer range (membranes, surfaces, etc.) to materials characterization under hydrogen atmosphere and thermal management to systemic investigations in the energy system. .
